Aims

To develop student knowledge of the principles underpinning the law on criminal evidence To develop student knowledge of the different types of criminal evidence To enable students to critically evaluate legal and criminal justice decision-making in the criminal evidence field in the light of relevant policy To raise awareness of the changing criminal justice policy landscape in relation to criminal evidence

Outline Syllabus:The scope and foundations of the law on criminal evidence - exclusion, burdens and standards of proof The changing nature of rights relating to silence and self-incrimination, in law and criminal justice practice Disclosure and public interest immunity Police activity, ethics and covert surveillance evidence Corroboration of evidence Circumstantial evidence Witness evidence Identification evidence Expert evidence in the criminal trial Character evidence Hearsay evidence
