Aims
1. To deepen students' reading across forms of shorter prose (e.g. fiction, memoir, landscape writing) and to cultivate independent reading.
2. To further develop the student's ability to apply the narrative techniques in prose writing.
3. To expand the student's understanding of the range of prose writing.
4. To foster reflective writing about their reading and writing.
Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate a wide range of independent reading.

Demonstrate an ability to read as a writer.
3.
Produce a piece of original writing, which demonstrates an ability to synthesize observed techniques.

Demonstrate an increased capacity for articulating the way reading and the study of craft shapes their original writing.

Redraft their own original creative writing in the light of peer criticism, applying the outcomes of the workshops to the redrafting process.

Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Students will acquire a deepening understanding of some of the forms which prose takes and learn to write a piece of original prose within a chosen form. Students will study examples of short fiction and literary non-fiction, learning some of the key techniques involved. They will reflect on their reading and their own creative processes.

In this module you will acquire a deepening understanding of some of the forms which prose takes and learn to write a piece of original prose within a chosen form. You will study examples of short fiction and literary non-fiction, learning some of the key techniques involved. Then, you will reflect on your reading and your own creative processes.

Additional Information:The prose produced for AS1 will be accompanied by a 750-word reflection, which will demonstrate their understanding of their own creative processes and the way in which their reading has informed their writing. The critical essay for AS2 will be written from a writer’s perspective and will demonstrate the student’s understanding of the craft involved in producing a publishable piece of prose writing (for example, a short story or a short memoir).
