Aims

1. To distinguish between the different techniques necessary for the writing of a novel as compared to a short story; 2. To develop an understanding of generic forms of the novel; 3. To develop an understanding of the market for the proposed novel; 4. To foster independent writing ability with peer workshop support; 5. To provide practice in the production of work in a form acceptable to the publishing world.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Students will learn how books are proposed to publishers, how to write a proposal for a novel and how to write an opening chapter of a novel. Students will study good and bad examples of opening chapters, learning some of the key techniques involved, and will also study the differences between a short story and an opening chapter. The creative process will be examined and we will consider the way a writer creates a novel.
Module Overview:
Clearly, a novel can not be completed in one semester, but you should be left with an awareness of what is required to make this huge leap from short story writing. You will emerge with a proposal for its completion and a deeper understanding of what method best suits you to live with, revise, complete and place a book.
