Aims

1. To develop students storytelling/narrative structural skills and to demonstrate the use of scene cards, step outlines, treatments in the development of a screenplay. 2. To develop students understanding of dialogue function and particular requirements of the screenplay form and allow them to further explore its dramatic potential.

Learning Outcomes

Demonstrate an understanding of telling a self-contained story in screenplay form.

Use story structuring techniques effectively.
3.
Write an original 15-minute screenplay in the appropriate form.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Students will examine the use of step-outlines, treatments, scene cards and character biographies as aids to structuring a screenplay. Students with further study, screenplay formatting, writing to the ‘cut’, dialogue function and develop their understanding of the dramatic potential of the form. Students will undertake a series of related exercises. The syllabus will be delivered in short lectures and workshop/small group sessions.
Module Overview:
This module will develop your skills in structuring and writing a treatment and a screenplay. It will encourage individual development of filmic storytelling skills in a critical, supportive environment in preparation for the longer stories you will develop and write in Level 6 Screenwriting modules.
