Aims
This module will
1) Introduce students to the range of research methods used within criminal justice, and the strengths and weaknesses of these approaches.
2) Provide students with an overview of the development of research and evaluation within criminal justice in the last 50 years, and why it is so important
3) Introduce students to essential techniques around writing a literature review and research proposal.
4) Allow students to consider ethical considerations around research and how these can be managed
Learning Outcomes

Critically assess research and its contribution to the field.

Develop a properly constructed research proposal.

Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The module will introduce students to the importance of the role within criminal justice, and the impact that research has had on how the system operates. Students will explore qualitative and quantitative methods and why each have their strengths and weaknesses, and what can be done to mitigate these. Ethical considerations of research will be considered in a pragmatic way.
In addition students will have the opportunity to learn about data sets that are already available for use for research in criminal justice, how these can be used, and the pitfalls of relying on them too closely.
Students' knowledge of research methodologies and associated concerns will then be applied to the practical business of doing research and the difficulties inherent in this. In addition, students will learn about how to construct a literature review and research proposal.
