Aims
1. To develop students’ awareness of the dramatic storytelling structures that operate in screen narrative.
2. To further develop students’ awareness of formatting and exposition in the process of writing a screenplay.
3. To develop students’ awareness of a range of film and TV genres.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Demonstrate an understanding of story structure and relate this to particular screen examples.
2.
Write a 10-minute screenplay and treatment in the appropriate format, demonstrating an understanding of the possibilities and constrictions of the form.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Students will view a selection of film and TV dramas and be introduced to writerly narrative theories such as archetypal character function, the Hero’s Journey model, 3-Act Structure, genre considerations and sequence construction.
Students will view and examine short films in preparation for their portfolio assignments and have opportunities to workshop their own developing screen ideas throughout the semester.

This module aims to further develop your awareness of screen language in relation to screenwriterly concerns and encourage you to examine the narrative devices and structures inherent in film and television productions. It will also encourage you to develop your own storytelling skills.
