Aims

To build knowledge of substantive criminal law and civil law offences. To enable analysis of the links between criminal and civil law wrongs and the usage of criminal justice responses. To develop critical understanding of how the definition and enforcement of criminal and civil law offences could be reformed

Learning Outcomes

Critically analyse the ways in which substantive criminal law offences are used and enforced in criminal justice practice

Show understanding of the links between civil law wrongs and criminal justice responses to those wrongs

Understand ways in which criminal and civil law could be reformed in order to achieve social justice

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Criminal law non-violent offences and responses: property offences, public order offences and drugs offences Criminal law violent offences and responses: homicide, non-fatal assaults, sexual offences Understanding the links between tort law and criminal justice Understanding the links between land law and criminal justice Understanding the links between equity law and criminal justice
Module Overview:
To build knowledge of substantive criminal law and civil law offences. To enable analysis of the links between criminal and civil law wrongs and the usage of criminal justice responses. To develop critical understanding of how the definition and enforcement of criminal and civil law offences could be reformed This module aims to raise students' awareness of a range of substantive criminal law offences. It will also take a critical approach to how criminal and civil law offences are responded to by criminal justice, and how social justice is and is not achieved through their regulation.
