Aims
The aim of this module is to introduce the fundamental concepts of research methods, along with covering the basic application and interpretation of various data analysis techniques. This module introduces students to the necessary study skills required for effective learning for their degree programme. In addition the module will introduce basic
research methods.
Learning Outcomes

Identify various aspects of the different types of research design
2.
Apply, interpret and report a variety of analysis techniques
3.
Evidence their ability to undertake and apply appropriate academic skills and techniques.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Basic study skills for higher education, including reading, referencing, note taking,
assignment planning, time management and searching for information. Library skills
(e.g., searching databases).
Presenting information, Introduction to research,
Introduction to research techniques and evaluation tools, Personal development.
Research Designs: Approaches to research (Quantitative, Qualitative, Mixed Methods)
Types of Research (e.g., Descriptive, Experimental, Analytical, Case Study, Narrative, ethnography); Types of research design (including threats to internal and external validity).
Basic Data handling: Measurements and types of data (including validity, reliability and objectivity); Exploring and summarizing data.
Basic Quantitative Methods and Analyses
Qualitative Methods and Analyses: Methods (e.g., interviews, focus groups); analysis (e.g., Thematic analysis).
Additional Information:This module introduces students to the necessary study skills required for effective learning for their degree programme. In addition the module will introduce basic research methods. This module is taught in two ways: lectures and peer learning
groups (PLGs). The module will introduce students to the required skills needed for understanding and undertaking research. Lectures will provide underpinning theory and PLGs will be used to allow for further discussion of the concepts covered.
