Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This module will be delivered through lecture, workshop and project rehearsal activities that culminate in the practical application of the acquired skills during a production and during a performance project. In the lecture and workshop series, students will study costume, design, lighting, sound, stage management, props and scenery. Each lecture will study the theoretical, creative and practical application of each discipline. In addition, students will develop a greater understanding of production roles including Stage Management, Front of House Management and Production Management where professional codes of conduct associated with performance and creative practice will be explored. Creative and Technical sessions will require the student to undertake substantial research along with developing a strategy that will assist them in crewing and supporting a production or performance in one of many different roles. Throughout the module, students will be encouraged to develop critical thinking, problem analysis and resolution as well as Occupational Health and Safety and risk management processes. Students will then deepen their understanding and learning by engaging in 2 projects: a) They will work in small groups to crew and support one of the many productions at the institute. b) Participate as performers in a student-led performance project to experience creative application of production elements. The first will provide students with experience and mentorship from technical production teams, the latter with an experience of production process and staging from the viewpoint of the creator and performer.
Additional Information:This module equips the students with a theoretical and practical understanding of how theatre is developed, created and produced. Assessment is via Reflective Journal, evaluating practical application from a technical and a creative perspective.
