Learning Outcomes

1.
Recognise and utilise the most common compositional forms, structures and arrangement techniques in creating new musical works to specific composition briefs
2.
Review the development of musical works throughout the writing process and contribute constructive criticism and feedback to peers in the context of an emerging canon of popular, contemporary and commercial music
3.
Using computer notation software, present musical scores recalling fundamental arranging and scoring techniques

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Composition lectures will explore creative conventions in popular, contemporary and commercial music and will make connections to related fundamental harmonic and theoretical techniques. Composition seminars will explore the practical application of techniques studied within composition lectures and will be a forum for regular feedback and development for student composers. Sibelius workshops will take students from the very basic stages of using the software through to advanced techniques which will enable them to complete professional standard musical scores. These will be supported by Sibelius drop-in classes so that students can have assistance with any issues they may incur throughout the year.
