Aims

This module provides an opportunity to develop and apply many of the skills acquired in Design and Construction Skills; designing for a given text for a specific space, in collaboration with a theatre director. It aims to enable students to develop further their understanding, knowledge and skills in set design, costume design, technical drawing and lighting design in a production context. The module aims to guide students through the design process, concentrating on the development, presentation and communication of ideas. It is a theoretical module, ending at the point at which a realised project would go into production.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Interpret a text to develop a hypothetical design in support of an author's vision.
2.
Research independently and effectively, to support and develop a design for live performance.
3.
Experiment with existing and innovative ways of communicating and expressing ideas and information coherently and articulately, using two and three-dimensional forms.
4.
Collaborate and negotiate with a director, building an effective communicative relationship.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This module will be delivered by TPDT staff and visiting practitioners, culminating in a collaboration with a theatre director who will select a choice of texts for design. A series of lectures, seminars, workshops and field trips will examine the relationship between a theatrical text and various aspects, processes and theories of theatre design. Sessions will include: script analysis; the role of the director; research methodologies; advanced model making; costume drawing; practical experience in the process of designing the lighting for a show, incorporating technical paperwork lighting plots and lantern schedules; working from ground plans and venue specifications and storyboarding. Building on this foundation of knowledge and understanding created by initial sessions, a series of one to one meetings with the director will support the development of a hypothetical design. The final assessment will require students to present a completed model, costume drawings, lighting storyboards and technical drawings of their final design.
Additional Information:Lois Maskell is the Module Leader.
