Aims
The aims of this module are to:
1. Provide the student with a foundation of the Academic Skills required to complete their undergraduate studies.
2. Outline the historical evolution of theatre arts practice from Ancient Greek Theatre to the present.
3. Review the global evolution of Musical Theatre and the characteristics of definitive styles and eras by examining composers, performers and works.
4. Provide an understanding of key concepts in Music Theory (notation, vocabulary, theory, form, and aural skills).
Learning Outcomes

Select and analyse information from a range of academic sources to formulate writ-ten ideas utilising academic practices and methodologies.
2.
Undertake guided research into identified elements of musical theatre history.
3.
Define key periods of musical theatre history and identify stylistic characteristics of works from those periods.
4.
Demonstrate a fundamental understanding of music theory and music literacy, and fundamental skills in aural acuity and musicianship.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:In Musical Theatre History, students will explore the emergence and global evolution of musical theatre as a distinctive genre within the performing arts. By studying the varied roles that theatre and music have had throughout the history of theatrical performance, students will gain contextual understanding of the precursory developments in theatrical performance that led to the emergence of musical theatre as a distinctive genre in the 19th century. Through an examination of key works and practitioners, students will develop an historically informed understanding of the characteristics and evolution of definitive styles and eras within the genre.
Materials of Music provides comprehensive training in music theory and aural studies assisting students to develop accurate theoretical and listening skills within a practical setting. Lectures explore fundamentals of music theory and how they can be applied to repertoire from musical theatre. Principles of pitch organisation, rhythmic structure, performance directions, identification of musical motifs, phrase and chord analysis for the comprehension of melodic and harmonic structure are examined with the aim of improving the student's comprehension of melodic and harmonic structure. The lectures will also provide students with the opportunity to develop appropriate aural musicianship skills through engaging in activities such as sight-singing, rhythm studies, and aural analysis of melody, rhythm, harmony and form.
Additional Information:This module equips students with a comprehensive understanding of the history of musical theatre and the fundamentals of theoretical and aural musicianship.
Assessment is via submission of an essay as well as examination of module content.
