Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The module is delivered through a practical exploration of the staging and development of sequences from existing musical theatre productions. Students will explore the relationship between singing, dance, and performance within an ensemble context. Over the period of the module students will explore a wide range of musical theatre forms from the early 20th century to contemporary musical theatre. As part of the classes, students will learn to understand the rehearsal process used in musical theatre performance settings and how to work as part of a company. Students will be expected to always display professional etiquette as they expand their understanding of Musical Theatre techniques. In the first half of the module, students will work with a creative team to explore the legit style of musical theatre. In the second half of the module, students will be directed by multiple practitioners as they begin to rehearse the material for their Performance Project. This will allow students to understand how different practitioners work and how to interpret and instigate direction from multiple individuals. Stu-dents will be expected to use personal time for preparation and reflective practice. The ensemble singing classes will provide students with the opportunity to explore a variety of styles of repertoire. Ensemble classes will focus primarily on learning how to work under the direction of a Musical Director; having the opportunity to break into smaller and larger ensembles, working specifically from sheet music and learning the nuances of being a Musical Theatre ensemble singer. At this level, students will begin by working on material from the legitimate musical theatre repertoire before progressing to more contemporary material as the module progresses.
Additional Information:The module introduces students to Musical Theatre repertoire and ensemble performance. Assessment is via two staged performances.
