Aims

To establish the principles and conventions for the quantification and costing of domestic construction works and associated infrastructure.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Measure low rise domestic buildings using various industry standard guidelines and documentation.
2.
Produce approximate estimates for construction projects using various information sources.
3.
Price Bill of Quantity items from the first principle.
4.
Use Information Technology and appropriate software packages to produce and price project documentation to a professional standard.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:• Introduction to standard measurement conventions, guidelines and documentation. • Measurement skills, writing the dimensions, calculating simple areas and volumes pertaining to built assets. • Measurement of buildings • Pre-tender estimating • Explain the factors affecting construction costs and pricing of labour, plant and materials. • Prepare Bill of Quantities for domestic building elements and price them • Introduce software packages to building measurement, documentation and costing.
Additional Information:The module establishes the principles and conventions for the quantification and costing of building works and considers their application by the Quantity Surveyor and the Estimator, as part of their key role in the economic and financial management of the construction process.
