Aims

To introduce students to the practical issues arising from Recording audio and Live sound reinforcement

Learning Outcomes

1.
Use a DAW to implement drum replacement
2.
Specify typical acoustic drum sizes and specifications
3.
Operate industry-standard hardware and software to produce CD quality 16bit 44.1 kHz audio
4.
Create recorded audio music productions to be used with video

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Audio Mixing Desks, signal flow, mike/line, channel strip, input gain, EQ, Digital Audio Workstations, interfaces, bit rates, buffers, sampling rates Drum replacement Health & Safety for audio engineering Impedance and level matching Introduction to small-scale live sound reinforcement systems Pro-Tools, Apple logic pro x Levels, decibels (in signals), metering, gain structure Loudspeakers, Amplifiers, Monitors Non-linear editing, dubbing and effects using computers Properties of microphones (types, polar patterns, phantom power) Properties of the ear and auditory perception Recording studio equipment & live sound
Additional Information:The module encompasses an introduction to the theoretical knowledge and practical skills of audio & music production and to the equipment used in audio production. The module will cover both 'live-broadcast' and 'recorded' production. Students will be required to work both individually and in small groups using equipment to become familiar with its characteristics in a way that also demonstrates safe systems of work.
