Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Key issues in developmental psychology; attachment, language development, cognitive development social development. Key issues in individual differences research: personality, intelligence, learning, psychometrics, dynamics.
Module Overview:
1. To present a range of topics in developmental psychology and individual differences. 2. To introduce the methods applied to understanding key issues in developmental psychology and individual differences. 3. To enable students to consult and summarise appropriate sources to explain key issues in developmental psychology and individual differences.
Additional Information:This module introduces students to range of historical issues in developmental psychology and individual differences. Within the core area of developmental psychology students will consider issues such as the processes of attachment between a parent and child underpinning early social relationships, how children learn to understand and to produce spoken language including the impact of the social context, the developing cognitive skills of a child and how social and cultural factors may impact upon this development. Within the core area of individual differences students will examine the evidence for differences in personality types and variations in intelligence. They will also consider the topic of psychometrics; how these traits and abilities of individuals can be measured and assessed. The final topic examines aspects of dynamics; emotions, motivations and moods. They will also consider the topic of psychometrics; how these traits and abilities of individuals can be measured and assessed. Psychometric tests will be explored with reference to qualitative aspects that includes content validity and the role of focus groups.
