Aims
Introduce students to the legal, professional and ethical issues relating to the use of
a broad range of technologies in the policing and law enforcement context.
Explore the issues around social media and its use in the personal and professional
context.
Explore the criminal use of technologies and the challenges this presents
Learning Outcomes
1.
Analyse the functions of a broad range of technologies used in policing and law
enforcement.
2.
Explain the legal, social, ethical and practical issues raised by the use of such
technologies
3.
Analyse the process of governance and accountability as it relates to the use of
such technologies.
4.
Identify how the use of technology has influenced the policing and law
enforcement landscape.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:(i)The module will examine the broad range of technologies that are used by both
police and the wider law enforcement agencies and the technologies encountered by
them. Specifically those technologies encountered as a means to commit or facilitate
crime
(ii) Students will be able to describe the practical, legal, professional and ethical
issues raised by the use of technology
(iii) Students will be able to describe the use of technology to provide effective
solutions to crime prevention and detection.
Additional Information:The module will utilise blended learning, which will combine e-learning with more
traditional teaching strategies. In addition students will be encouraged to monitor
their own learning in this module through their Personal Development Plans.
