Aims

The aim of this module is to teach students the mechanisms of policy making in democratic societies with the identification of civil society as a main participant in governance.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Identify the key ingredients of democratic governance.
2.
Identify the interaction of state and civil society in democratic governance.
3.
Analyse challenges in democratic governance with case studies.
4.
Assess the impact of international organisations on governance.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:1. The Colonial Legacy and democratization of colonial world: Issues in postcolonial periods. 2. State and Society - History of civil society, social movements and politics 3. Different conceptualizations on Civil Society: Role of Civil Society in - Capitalism, Socialism and under fascism. 4. Identity Politics and Civil Society: Assimilation, Accommodation and Multiculturalism Democratisation processes - The concept of liberal democracy, Political Liberalisation, Democracy, Peace and Development 5. Governance structure – executive branch, legislative branch, administrative divisions, civil service structure, provincial council structure, local government structure, judicial branch, political pressure groups 6. Identity politics and issues in governance: Equal representation and distribution of resources, ethnic blindness in policy making 7. Issues of governance under market liberalization: Privatization, National Economy, Marginalization, Resource exploitation and civil society activism 8. Introduction to global civil society: International human rights regime, influential institutions (i.e. UN agencies, INGOs, Regional organizations - African Union etc.) 9. Asia and the International System - The United Nations (UN), The Commonwealth, The Non Aligned Movement (NAM))
