Aims

1. Develop an understanding of research and analysis;
2. Gain an awareness of the complexity of the audiences you will need to communicate with as a designer;
3. Develop visual and verbal communication skills;
4. Begin to develop a visual vocabulary;
5. Develop skills in visual reportage and communication;
6. Be introduced to visual techniques, illustration, photo imagery and digital imagery;
7. Gain an understanding of the importance of shape, space and colour in visual communication.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Undertake a critical analysis of a range of visual imagery and be able to make insightful comparisons.
2.
Explain in writing, orally and visually the way in which visual imagery is used to convey messages to various audiences in a cultural, social, historical and commercial context
3.
Communicate thinking using sketches.
4.
Convey narratives, messages and concepts using a range of techniques common to designers.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:
The module integrates understanding, critical thinking and analysis of visual imagery.
You will broaden your knowledge of the visual language of art and design and the contemporary context in which this exists.
You will explore the psychology, methodology and techniques of visual communication and be introduced to a wide range of visual communication technologies and processes.
You will be introduced to the fundamentals of typography exploring how text is used in conjunction with visual imagery to communicate complex narratives in various contexts: artistic, technical, marketing, instructional, environmental, informational, etc.
Additional Information:
During this module you will focus on visual communication and the means by which it is used to convey various concepts, stories, information and messages both in a cultural, social, and commercial context.
