Aims
The aims of the module are to:
1. Provide the student with a history of popular music and the nature and style of music from particular eras and genres.
2. Provide the student with the knowledge to understand the creative and structural elements of the popular song.
3.Provide the student with opportunities to explore, through practice, the differing approaches to music performance and composition.
4. To differentiate for the student the social, cultural and political contexts of the eras and genres explored.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Describe and demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between popular music forms, structures and performance styles and the historical, cultural, social and political context in which they were created and performed.
2.
Describe and demonstrate an understanding of the traditional form and structure of the popular music song.
3.
Describe and demonstrate the differing dynamics and stylistic qualities of the popular song in different historical periods.
4.
Demonstrate the ability to recreate musical works in specific music genres, styles and trends.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:This module is both theoretical and practical.
Theory / History
Within this part of the module the student will explore the development of the popular song from the turn of the 19th/20th Century. The module will explore the changing relationship between the popular song and the period in which it developed taking into account historical, cultural, social and political factors. The module will also explore the form and structure of the popular song and how this has developed up to the contemporary period.
Practical
Building on the student’s historical and theoretical studies students will be supported in exploring the differing stylistic and dynamic compositional characteristics of popular music forms from history.
Additional Information:The module equips students with an understanding of the music business and their potential roles within it.
