Aims

To examine the relationship between environment, society, and sustainability in the context of increasing concerns about human impacts on the environment. To focus on issues in relationship to population, economic growth, resource use and distribution, and social welfare. To outline different scientific, technological, social, and political approaches to handling 'real world' issues.

Learning Outcomes

Explain the nature of environmental problems in their social contexts

Identify the nature and origins of the environmental problems of both developing and developed economies
3.
Discuss the steps for predicting environmental impacts and consequences of human actions, along with the difficulties inherent in such activity
4.
Discriminate between the different scales at which environment and people interface (from personal behaviours through to broad political structures)

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Defining 'environment', 'society' and 'sustainability' and their points of interface. The origins of current environmental problems, the development of environmental concern and exploration of different attitudes to tackling environmental problems; Personal involvement in environmental issues. Climate change and its link with contemporary environmental issues will be an implicit theme throughout the module. Case studies of environmental modification and exploitation: examples to include food production and (un)sustainable consumption; ocean sustainability; biodiversity; ecological footprints; energy resources; waste management; urban (un)sustainability.
