To develop an understanding and appreciation of the built environment sector and the different professional disciplines that constitute built environment practice.

The size and economic significance of the work carried out by different sectors within the built environment
The changing social, political, economic (including financial), legal, environmental, technological and business frameworks on the built environment.
Introduction to planning, property market trends and development cycles
Government economic activity and how it affects the construction and built environment sector.
The principles of a sustainable built environment.
International perspectives on built environment practice.
Overview of professional disciplines and their roles in the built environment.
An introduction to academic study skills such as information searching; referencing and report writing.
