Aims
To introduce students to the place of talk in developing children's literacy skills and to develop associated pedagogical knowledge and understanding.
To begin to develop students' knowledge and understanding of the reading and writing processes and appropriate pedagogy associated with the teaching of these areas in Key Stage 1.
Planning to teach English in Key Stage 1.
To learn about the grammar and punctuation content in Key Stage 1 and the place of this in the writing process.

Examine and explain how talk underpins children's reading and writing skills.

Recognise appropriate pedagogy in planning, teaching and learning in Key Stage 1 English.

Apply and illustrate an understanding of English subject knowledge in Key Stage 1.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Overview of the National Curriculum requirements for English.
What is reading? What is writing? What is the place of talk in the primary classroom?
Teaching children to talk and listen.
Types of talk in the classroom.
The importance of a language rich curriculum and the place of quality literature.
Drama key skills.
Introduction to the teaching of reading and writing.
Grammar and punctuation in Key Stage 1.
Module Overview:
The aim of this module is to learn how to develop children's literacy skills and to develop associated pedagogical knowledge and understanding. You will develop your knowledge and understanding of the reading and writing processes and appropriate pedagogy associated with the teaching of these areas in Key Stage 1. You will also learn about the grammar and punctuation content in Key Stage 1 and the place of this in the writing process.
