Learning Outcomes
1.
Know the variety of social systems found in extant primate species.
2.
Understand evolutionary processes underlying primate social systems and behaviour.
3.
Draw comparisons between primate and other mammalian social systems.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:The syllabus will provide a basic understanding of evolutionary processes leading to the current variety of primate social systems. As such, the module will cover topics such as:
• social organisation
• benefits and costs of sociality
• primate sexual selection
• primate social behaviour
• current socio-ecological models
• kin selection theory
Module Overview:
This module provides an introduction into existing primate social systems and the evolutionary processes that led to their development. Topics covered include social organisation, primate sexual selection, primate social behaviour and kin selection theory.
