Aims
1. To allow students to appreciate the requirements of studying at HE level within the context of the Criminology programme and to acquire such skills in a supportive environment and module structure.
2. To provide induction into use of Library, JMU intranet, Canvas and other key aspects of studying at LJMU.
3. To encourage students to engage with the development of employability skills.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Use recommended sources to prepare written work which conforms to academic standards of clarity, structure, referencing requirements; be competent in the use of university IT resources.
2.
Effectively apply a range of academic skills required to succeed at HE level.
3.
Identify and reflect upon the following aspects of self-awareness in respect of personal development and career planning: strengths and weaknesses, motivations and values, ability to work with others.
Module Content
Outline Syllabus:An indicative range of topics studied includes:
• Referencing requirements
• Academic Misconduct
• Writing at University
• Constructing academic arguments
• Understanding the marking criteria
• IT skills
• Employability skills
Additional Information:This module is designed to introduce students to the study skills that are required for successful learning in higher education. Students will be able to build on and practice their subject-specific and key skills and begin to map their development as active learners to be able to put these skills into action throughout their Criminology programme.
