Aims
1. To examine the relationship between sociology and culture.
2. To apply contemporary theory to the analysis of cultural texts and practices.
3. To develop students’ understandings of the sociological relevance of cultural texts.

Module Content
Outline Syllabus:Lecture block 1: Classical sociological theory to cultural sociology.
Lecture block 2: Objects of contemporary cultural sociology (art, literature, music, etc).

- Clearly situate the development of sociology in relation to culture.
- Differentiate between a range of approaches to the sociological analysis of artwork, cultural texts and practices.

Additional Information:This module begins with a longue durée examination of the relationship between sociology and culture. The module then examines the emergence of culture as a domain of sociological enquiry and social policy in the UK. Having contextualized the relationship between culture and sociology and explored the emergence of cultural sociology, in the final part of the module the emphasis is placed upon particular streams within cultural sociology e.g. sociology of art, sociology of music, etc.
