Aims

This module introduces students to the discipline of sociology, covering both classic and contemporary research as applied to issues of contemporary debate.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:This module is based on the principle of student-centred student choice to ensure that students’ experience is engaging and democratic, and provides opportunities to experience choice, autonomy and freedom in what is studied. While Part 1 will be compulsory, students may choose their preferred topics from the below list of sessions from parts 2 to 5. Part 1: Thinking Sociologically: Theories and Methods What is sociology? Theories and theorizing Options part 2: Social Identities Socialization, identity and interaction Sex, gender, and sexuality Racial and ethnic identities Crime and deviance Body, health and medicine Options part 3: Culture, Knowledge, and Belief Education Communication and the media Religion, belief and meaning Options part 4: - Social Organization and Control Family and life course Cities and communities Organization, management and control The state, social policy and welfare Globalization Options part 5: Production, Inequalities and Social Divisions Work, employment and leisure Inequality, poverty and wealth Stratification, class and status Power, division and protest

It provides the context for debate and discussion that enables students to develop their critical awareness skills. It deals clearly with the full complexity of sociological issues, examining questions of theory and method and presenting clear accounts of major studies in sociology. It also applies sociology to important issues of contemporary debate, such as global warming, faith schools, violence in the media, and others.
