Aims

To develop the student’s personal study skills, and relate these to the research process. To introduce the student to the concept of evidence, application of evidence practice, and develop a basic understanding of the nature and processes of research.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Develop a broad range of study skills, which can be utilised in academic and professional practice.
2.
Understand how evidence and research underpins and supports the development of personal study skills.
3.
Discuss essential concepts of the research process.
4.
Evaluate evidence use.
5.
Identify how research influences and underpins midwifery practice.
6.
Identify and reflect upon the following aspects of self-awareness in respect of personal development: strengths and weaknesses, motivations, values and ability to work with others.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Introduction to: Research terminology, use of critiquing frameworks, qualitative research, quantitative research, mixed methods research, alternative research methods, sampling and recruitment, methods of collecting evidence, research paradigms, research ethics, evidence based practice, data analysis, dissemination.
Module Overview:
This module will develop your personal study skills and relate these to the research process. You will be introduced to the concept of evidence, the application of evidence practice, and you will develop a basic understanding of the nature and processes of research.
Additional Information:This module will enable the students to recognise and develop individual learning styles and study skills, to support academic progression. It will facilitate students to gain an awareness and understanding of the research process. Students will be introduced to the concept of evidence based practice, and how research can influence care in practice for mothers, babies and families.
