Aims

To introduce students to the legal systems of England and of the EU and to provide a foundation of knowledge of the substantive laws of negligence and contract

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:"The English Legal System – common law, courts, tribunals, personnel Sources of law, judicial precedent and statutory interpretation Criminal liability and corporate responsibility Legal remedies - damages and cancellation The European Union and the EU Institutions EU legal sources: treaties, regulations and directives EU law: legal principles, freedom of movement Negligence - duty of care, breach, loss, defences Contract - Formation: agreement, intent, capacity, and privity Contract - Terms & representations, conditions, warranties, breach Contract – Discharge: by performance, by frustration Agency and bailment Introductory coverage: Sale of Goods (implied terms) Bills of Lading Notes: This is an introductory law module for Maritime and Logistics students that lays a foundation for subsequent legal modules in levels 5 & 6.
