Aims

1. Develop a deep understanding of sociological perspectives on identity and representation, and equality and diversity, in contemporary society, and to explore the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, age, disability and/or social class. 2. Develop, enhance and practise essential academic study skills, including library search, identifying and analysing relevant sources, referencing, and academic writing. 3. Reflect upon students’ personal development (PDP).

Learning Outcomes

1.
Explain and analyse the ways in which identity and inequality can become the basis for social divisions and political mobilisation, and apply a variety of sociological theories and/or definitions of identity, equality and intersectionality to contemporary society.
2.
Demonstrate the basic skills required for effective study and learning.
3.
Review one’s own academic progress during the first year of study, supported through individual PDP meetings with a named personal tutor.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Not subject matter-related: Study skills (library search, identifying and analysing relevant sources, referencing, and academic writing) Personal Development Subject-matter related: Theories of social inequality, equality and intersectionality Theories of identity politics and representation Social identities, belonging and community Power, inequality and difference Culture and Ideology Youth Culture, subcultures and post subcultures Social movements, equality activists and champions Economic equality: the workplace and occupations Affective equality: the family and households Democratic equality: citizenship and communities Cultural equality: education and religion Policy, practice and legislative developments
Module Overview:
This module develops your deep understanding of sociological perspectives on identity and representation, and equality and diversity, in contemporary society, whilst exploring the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, age, disability and social class. Moreover, the module will develop, enhance and practise essential academic study skills, including library searches, identifying and analysing relevant sources, referencing, and academic writing. Also integral to the module will be individual meetings with your personal tutor in order to review your transition into higher education and academic progress during your first year of study.
Additional Information:This module develops a deep understanding of sociological perspectives on identity and representation, and equality and diversity, in contemporary society, whilst exploring the intersections of race, class, gender, sexuality, age, disability and/or social class. Moreover, the module will develop, enhance and practise essential academic study skills, including library search, identifying and analysing relevant sources, referencing, and academic writing. Also integral to the module will be individual PDP meetings with students’ personal tutor in order to review students’ transition into HE and academic progress during their first year of study.
