To introduce students to the roles, functions, features and operations of the maritime sector

Appreciate the structure of the international maritime industry and the role of ships as facilitators of maritime trade

Show understanding of the design characteristics of different ships within a variety of contexts

Demonstrate an awareness of the factors affecting the management and operation of ships

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:International trade and the organisation of the global maritime industry – maritime geography and global trade routes, service providers, industry organisations, global shipping industry. Ship structure and dynamics - ship types and categories; ship layout and basic design features; vessel measurements; ship motions and stability; propulsion and navigation systems. Principles of cargo carriage – cargo categorisations; handling characteristics; stowage principles; unitisation, multimodalism and standardisation; container types and structure. Shipping business and management - ship classification and registration; ship acquisition and charter; liner and tramp shipping; shipping alliances; ship management function including crewing and voyage estimating and planning.
