Aims

To build student awareness of the journalism industry and its development To develop student knowledge of potential job roles within and related to journalism, and encourage them to begin building employability skills and a professional identity To equip students with an understanding of the requirements of studying journalism in higher education and the skills required to succeed as independent learners throughout their degrees

Learning Outcomes

Discuss important features of the contemporary UK journalism industry, including an awareness of how it has changed during the digital era

Demonstrate awareness of different potential career paths related to journalism

Reflect on their own personal development in terms of both understanding and consumption of journalistic content (news literacy) and early career planning

Write to a high standard appropriate to Level 4 and demonstrate competency in referencing

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Students will develop basic knowledge of key issues affecting the journalism industry including how it has evolved over time, looking at issues such as the changing economics of journalism and the influence of technology. They will gain awareness of the main organisations and employers in the industry, and of the wide range of potential job roles within and related to it. They will develop the news literacy skills that will help them analyse news and other digital content, reflecting on their own journalism consumption habits as well as on issues such as objectivity, verification and the impact of audience on journalistic treatments. They will build the academic skills required to help them succeed throughout their studies, including knowledge of academic writing, use of the libraries and electronic resources, correct referencing and the avoidance of plagiarism. They will begin to develop social and professional skills such as time management and appropriate use of email and social media.
Module Overview:

Additional Information:The module includes the university Future Focus careers assessment and will encourage students to begin thinking about industry and employability skills as well as developing their wider academic skills, equipping them for successful study.
