Aims

1. To introduce the student to the habits and disciplines of a writing practice and to provide an environment in which the student can discover and develop their individual writer’s voice. 2. To introduce the student to the importance of operating within a community of writers and to foster the student’s ability to communicate with peers and work cooperatively in groups as well as individually. 3. To introduce the student to the importance of observation and imagination, developing an ability to relate to their environment with a writer’s eye and to draw on their own experiences to create original writing. 4. To introduce the student to the importance of reflecting on their own practice as a student of writing, as a writer and as a learner.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Demonstrate an ability to write creatively across a range of genres and to reflect upon their own practice and development as a writer.
2.
Operate independently and as part of a small group in accomplishing specific creative, reflective and observational tasks, demonstrating an awareness of the environment within which they are writing.
3.
To identify and reflect upon personal development, specifically strengths and weaknesses, motivations and values, and ability to work alongside others.

Module Content

Outline Syllabus:The module will develop the students’ ability to engage with their environment (specifically, the city of Liverpool) as a source and inspiration for creative writing, through focused exercises, seminar discussion and off-site visits (for example to Tate Liverpool). Through group work, it will foster the sense of belonging to a writerly community. It will develop the students’ ability to reflect on their own writing practice and development as a writer. It will also enable reflection on personal skills via CareerSmart.

This module is designed to encourage you to develop good writerly habits and to reflect on your own development as a practising writer. It focuses on the use of your environment (the city of Liverpool) as a source and inspiration for writing, via observation, reflection and research. It allows you the freedom to write across genres and to develop your own voice, while focusing on the importance of accurate observation and critical self-reflection. The module also works to foster a sense of group identity via seminars and group work.
