Module Content

Outline Syllabus:In semester 1, an introductory series of sessions will introduce students to local theatres, their missions and operational infrastructures. A succeeding series of workshops will offer introductions to a range of technical and production areas of activity – typically lighting, sound, wardrobe, front-of-house, workshop, and stage management, appropriate to live performance. The workshops will introduce the background to the various roles, the relevant professional etiquettes connected to them and the health and safety aspects of each role. Students will be able to get hands on experience in each area both with tutors in class and in private study time working with students who have already undertaken training, and usually in a production context. Mid-semester students will have the first opportunity to undertake Studio Tests. In semester 2 students will undertake two assigned roles: one as an assistant stage manager and one in a front-of-house capacity on departmental production work, and complete their Studio Test requirements. In addition, during the year they must opt to take at least two of the Studio Tests on offer which will then qualify them to work independently in the respective area of production and support their further study throughout the course.
