Aims
This course has three main aims linked to learning academic skills and personal development:
The first aim is to get students to identify what skills they have, what type of learner they are and the importance of scientific communication. Students will be introduced to Personal Development Planning (PDP). The second aim is to allow students to research different career options and to produce a targeted career plan for a specific job. Students will also produce a portfolio containing a CV, skills audit, SWOT analysis and demonstration of job related research. The third aim is to allow students to put their individual skills in to the context of working in a group. Group dynamics and giving oral presentations will be explored. Students will also be engaged in the assessment of the presentations.
Learning Outcomes
1.
Use a current topical subject from their programme area to produce a well-researched essay that demonstrates good use of scientific English.

Design a poster that highlights an interesting subject in their programme area
3.
Demonstrate active career researching by producing a portfolio of career related information.
4.
Work as part of team to deliver an oral presentation that demonstrates research in to a current topic of interest dependent on their programme of study. Assess what constitutes a good oral presentation and the pros and cons of group work

Course 3: Group Work and Presentations
Theory behind team work (Belbin); Importance of group work; Co-operation; Oral presentations – individual & group
Additional Information:This module is for individuals to develop an understanding of their own skill base and what they can do to enhance it. The module will also help students with their use of scientific language and different formats of scientific communication.
