Module Content

Outline Syllabus:Foundations of Psychology is a level three module concerned with the history of modern psychology. The goal of the module is to provide a fundamental overview of how psychology has developed as a scientific discipline over the last 120 years. A series of lectures, online sessions and tutorials will explore this development in terms of important theories and extra-scientific factors which have shaped it such as world affairs, politics and commerce. It considers, in detail, the major twentieth-century systems of psychology including major controversies and famous case studies. Finally, it presents an overview of Psychology’s place within contemporary societies, leading into the Semester 2 module Applied Psychology.
Module Overview:
This module will present the development of psychology within a historical context and consider psychology within the context of scientific philosophy. It will introduce you to the major 20th century psychologists and systems of psychology, and discuss contemporary issues in terms of key historical and conceptual ideas.
Additional Information:This course will provide a foundation of relevant knowledge about conceptual and historical issues in Psychology.
